“We value INDIVIDUALS and INTERACTIONS over processes and tools”
- Agile Manifesto -
Human capital is expensive! In Australia, typical scrum teams cost between $1m-$1.5m per annum. Any investment of this magnitude needs to be optimised and one of the most effective ways to achieve this is to ensure team members are highly engaged. Engaged teams are more productive, have higher velocity, fewer defects and lower turnover. In addition, with many organisations adopting Agile, there is a war on talent. Keeping your best Agile workers will require more than bean bags and ping pong tables.
IMPROVING TRIBE, SQUAD AND CHAPTER ENGAGEMENT
The Agile Manifesto has been well documented valuing:
1. VALUING INDIVIDUALS
To value Individuals you first need to understand Individuals – Clifton StrengthsFinder provides the key to understanding each person's area of Natural Talent. With a 1 in 33 million chance of someone else having the same order as your top 5 strengths - StrengthsFinder provides a unique way to understand individuals and their natural talents. Greater self-awareness is achieved when people understand their strengths profile and then apply it in the context of their role.
E.g. As a Scrum Master with Analytical in my Top 5,
2. VALUING INTERACTIONS
To value Interactions you need to understand team dynamics and how teams work together. McKinsey1 have noted that "Poor team dynamics can crush even the most talented individuals.” Collaboration is at the core of Agile delivery with a quarter of the Agile Principles focused on collaboration, including:
Maximising Agile effectiveness requires team members to be fully engaged and connected to the organisation. Research shows that highly engaged teams outperform poorly engaged teams on key measures including increased velocity, lower defect rates, lower absenteeism and reduced turnover. The key to successful Agile teams is to ensure engaged team members outnumber those who are disengaged and action plans exist to move to a more engaged workforce.
